Ramzan (Ramadan) is the holy month in which Quran was revealed. Roza (Fast), called ‘sawm’ in Arabic, is obligatory for all Muslims during the entire month. Fasting was prescribed (made compulsory) on the second Monday of the month of Sha’ban, in the 2nd year of the Hijra. It was before the Battle of Badr. Roza is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. In this month, the rewards for namaz, recitation of Quran and other good deeds are multiplied manifold. Tarawih is also arranged in the mosques where recitation of entire Quran is carried out. Layla-tal-Qadr, the most sacred night of the year, occurs on any odd-numbered night during the last Ashra (Last 10 days), i.e. either the night of 21, 23, 25, 27 or 29 of Ramzan. Eid al-Fitr is the culmination of Ramzan.
